In a recent report in the Crypto.com exchange platform, a remarkable statistic stands out: in 2023, the number of cryptocurrency holders climbed impressively, going from 432 million to 580 million, which represents an increase of 34 %. This figure highlights the growing interest in this expanding sector. But how to explain such an increase?

How to explain such an increase in cryptocurrency holders?

The Crypto.com cryptocurrency exchange has just published its annual report evaluating the proportion of individuals with cryptocurrencies on the planet, and the latter estimates that 580 million people today hold cryptos.

According to this study, the number of cryptocurrency holders experienced an increase of 34 % in 2023, from 432 million in January 2023 to 580 million today.

Bitcoin always in front of Ethereum

According to Crypto.com, the number of Bitcoin holders increased by 33 % over the year 2023, from 222 million in January to 296 million in December.

This growth can be explained by the sharp increase in the Bitcoin course, driven upwards by the growing interest of Bitcoin ETF whose requests were filed in June 2023, the emergence of BRC-20 and the Ordinal Protocol which generated more than 56 million registrations, as well as the increase in Bitcoin hashrate, testifying to the growing use of Bitcoin mining to regulate the electricity network.

On the other hand, Ether was able to attract 33 million investors, from 89 million in January to 124 million at the end of 2023, an increase of 39 %.

This performance is mainly due to its correlation with Bitcoin, as well as the advent of second -layer solutions (Layer 2). In addition, investors have gained confidence thanks to the transition without dysfunction of the network to ETH 2.0 and the flexibility brought by the Shanghai update allowing withdrawals to Ether Staking.

These figures closely reflect the dominance of these 2 currencies on the market, the BTC representing 51.5 % of the total capitalization of the cryptocurrency market, against 18.4 % for the ETH.
